Socializing Event (Dec. 26, 2024 only)
【National Ainu Museum】
The National Ainu Museum is the first national museum to come into existence in Japan specializing in the research and display of Ainu culture. It was established to revive and further develop the culture of the Ainu people.
The museum is a part of Upopoy (the Symbolic Space for Ethnic Harmony), a national project that seeks to revive and further develop Ainu culture as a “valued culture of our country” and build a “vibrant society with a rich and diverse culture free from discrimination” that respects the dignity of Indigenous Peoples. As a core facility of Upopoy, the National Ainu Museum seeks to uphold its mission “to respect the dignity of the Ainu as an Indigenous People, promote correct knowledge and understanding concerning Ainu history and culture at home and abroad, and contribute to the further development and creation of new Ainu culture”. It carries out exhibits of Ainu culture, research, educational programs, human resource development, and collection management.
【NoboribetsuJigokudani Valley】
Also known as Hell Valley, Hokkaido’s NoboribetsuJigokutani bubbles and steams with hot spring water, smoking like the imagined kingdom of demons.
NoboribetsuJigokutani is a volcanic caldera formed by the eruptions of Mt. Hiyori, the largest hot spring water source for Noboribetsu Onsen spas. A surreal landscape of rusty orange and white rocky terrain, its bubbling pools, geysers, and fumaroles let off clouds of steam that drift like heavy smoke.
【Noboribetsu Date Jidaimura】
Noboribetsu Date Jidaimura is a history theme park that is centered on the Edo Period (1603- 1867) when the Tokugawa Shogunate was in power for more than 250 years. It was founded in 1992 by the Daishinto Corporation as a chain of theme parks like Nikko Edomura. The Edo Period is a popular study in Japanese history because many of the cultural traditions were developed during the time Japan was in isolation from the rest of the world. Noboribetsu Date Jidaimura is located northwest of Noboribetsu city. The theme park is made of reconstructed buildings from the Edo Period. This allows visitors to experience the lifestyle of the period just by walking the streets. The descendants of the Katakura Kojuro, the right hand man of Date Masamune, were also inspirations for the theme park. Back in 1869, they became candidates to migrate to Noboribetsu in Hokkaido and trade their swords for hoes. They were pioneers who worked the land to bring it to glory that would rival Sendai.
At the Noboribetsu Date Jidaimura, there is a live Ninja show where a battle occurs inside a house. The Oiran (courtesans) show is a recreation of the entertainment experienced by the wealthy during the Edo Period. These shows are available all year round, but there are specific performances that are available depending on the season. The Outdoor Action Show and Nyanmage Comedy performances are in the summer, while the Samurai Show happens in the winter time. There are some other activities you can do like rent and dress up in costumes pertaining to the era around the theme park. There is also a Ninja Maze full of traps and tricks that you can try to escape from. Not only that, you can try your hand at ninja training by learning how to throw shuriken (throwing stars).
